Praisin’ in the Park is a community wide Bible School held every July in Felts Park in Galax. Praisin in the Park is a joint effort of area churches to reach kids with the love of Jesus.

Each night, from 6-8:30pm each evening, Felt’s Park will be filled with sounds of children laughing, playing, and praising in the park.  It will be a fun and exciting week to help children learn about Jesus. You can pre-register your children at the Praisin’ website.

It will be hosted by Pleasant Grove Baptist youth group from Independence. The cost is $5 per person. The event is held the first Saturday of each month.

Volunteers are needed to paint the new Free Clinic Medical Facility. The Free Clinic is in the process of moving from Old Town Street to Larkspur street. (behind Elks Lodge)  If you are interested, please call Cora Cox at 276-235-0894. She is co-ordinating the project and they hope to have the new facility painted by this Friday, May 21st.

Cornerstone Community Church would like to have a Team represent our community to and learn so we can do the same here with the new Fuller Center for Housing locally. The registration cost is $150 plus travel (which may be rather cheap) Interested?

The build will take place in Indianapolis, Ind. from Sept. 6-10, 2010. Twenty homes will be renovated and 10 new homes will be constructed as part of the build. That’s 20, 10 in 2010! Volunteers are being called to be a part of this monumental project! Join us for an unforgettable week of working with people from all over the country, of helping to uplift our partner families and improve communities, and of building a better world, one house at a time.

We need your hard working assistance. This event is open to all who have the calling to assist others with housing needs. Plan to go and be part of this huge Ministry!

Nicaragua after Thanksgiving!

Cornerstone Community Church will be leading a Mission Trip to Nicaragua from Nov. 26 – Dec. 4, 2010. This trip with be with Because We Care Ministries and will have multiple components of serving the Lord from Food, Medical, Village Visits, Labor, Testimonies to a Radio program each day. If you want to work hard for the Lord, get excited about your own walk and be part of folks getting saved, this is the Mission trip for you.

The trip will be led by a person who has over 30 trips to Latin America to date and will assist in any way possible to get you on the Mission Field. The cost will be approximately $1,100 +/- including Air, lodging, food and transportation in Nicaragua. This will be the 6th time Cornerstone Community Church, in Galax has been to the second poorest County in the Western Hemisphere to share the word of God!

You will be staying in a nice Mission House even with warm water…most of the time. The food is wonderful and the people are precious! This Mission Trip is available to anyone until we fill up at 20. Come join us to Nicaragua.

The food pantry was started approximately 13 years ago in the basement of a church. It eventually became too large for the space, and was moved to the present location when the thrift store was open.  Pastor Ted Bartlett saw a need in the community and surrounding areas due to the high rate of unemployment, and had a vision to open the thrift store.

Willing Partners sells a variety of items including clothing, furniture, books, appliances, jewelry, collectables, knick knacks, and numerous other things.

The store hours are Monday – Saturday from 9:00 am to 5:30 pm.  The food pantry is open on Tuesdays and Fridays from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm.

The Free Clinic of the Twin Counties began moving last week to its new location at 140 Larkspur Lane, Suite C, in Galax.

The clinic opened its first physical location in August 2007 at 300 W. Oldtown St. in Galax.

“Many thanks go to Danny Cockerham, who leased the building to the clinic for almost three years,” said Dina Slusher, director of the clinic. “The need for more space became apparent as more patients began to need assistance.”

The new location will offer 2,250 square feet of space.

Volunteers are needed to help move the Free Clinic’s dental trailer from Oldtown Street to its new location.

Anyone willing to assist can contact the clinic at 236-0421.

Donations are also being accepted to purchase dental supplies, now that renovation of the dental trailer is complete. Dental hygienists, dental assistants and dentists are needed to begin the program. There is also a shortage of nurse volunteers at the clinic.

There are volunteer opportunities available day, evening and weekend hours. There is also a need for office, Christian pastoral and mental health counselors.

The clinic will hold its next all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast fundraiser at the Galax Applebee’s on East Stuart Drive on Saturday from 8-10 a.m.

The Free Clinic of the Twin Counties improving access for low-income, uninsured residents of Carroll, Grayson, & City of Galax; demonstrating the value of community collaboration in an accountable health care project that utilizes the charitable gifts of a network of voluntary providers .

We believe that when “God shows up, he shows off.”  We stand amazed at what he is using the ministry to accomplish.  BWCM is a Christian non-profit organization.  The ministry is inter-denominational.  Our mission is to evangelize the lost.  We witness through various relief ministries to the people of  Nicaragua.

I will be gone from the clinic Thursday, May 13 – Wednesday, May 19^th to go on a mission trip to Haiti.  Please keep me in your prayers.  They are still having tremors in Port-Au-Prince and the heat is the hottest the earliest they remember having.  It is already up to 100 degrees most days.  The mosquitoes are rampant there.  My last trip I imagine I had more than 100 bites.  There is an outbreak of dengue fever going on there, as well as many cases of Malaria, which is normal for that area.  I will be joining a medical team from Arkansas to help with medical clinics, puppets for the children, and feeding the malnourished children.  Here are a few pictures of some of the starving children.  Note the red in their hair which is fromKwashiorkor.  The dark roots in their hair mean that they are now getting protein in their diet.  Many children and adults die every day from this hunger.  I take as much soy infant formula down as I can take in my suitcases and then give them money to buy local honey, peanut butter, powdered sugar, and oil and they make peanut butter balls that are saving their lives.  It is the same type product that Unicef feeds malnourished people.  All of this came about before I made my first trip down there.  A Federal Express Christian man shared with me about the product and then I talked with the missionary who found a recipe for the product.  Now missionaries all over Haiti are using it and finding it is saving the children’s lives and now expectant mothers are being fed the peanut butter balls and their babies have less birth defects.  More children are born with defects than without.  In most cases, the children are thrown away alive and left to die.  Missionaries are rescuing them and taking care of them.  There are more orphans than you can believe.  They are just living on the streets with no home, no clothes, and no food until they die.  Please keep these children and people in your prayers!

We’ll be working at Casa Betel (Bethel House), a halfway house for men struggling with addictions. Casa Betel is located in Orotina, Costa Rica, about 1 1/2 hours from the capital. The major project will be to start Project Nehemiah, a pre-cast dormitory for the men which will house 60 guys with indoor plumbing. We’ll also be hosting a medical clinic at Casa Betel for the men and doing vacation Bible school for the local children and sharing the love of God with every one through our words and actions.
